PC-497 Class Submarine Chaser:

  • Laid down 23 May 1942 by Commercial Iron Works, Portland, OR
  • Launched 7 September 1942
  • Commissioned USS PC-598, 5 March 1943
  • Reclassified as a Control Submarine Chaser, PCC-598, 20 August 1945
  • PCC-598 was used as an amphibious landing control craft/beach master for six island invasions:

    Peleliu (White Beach 2), 4 September 1944;
    Leyte (Red Beach), 20 October 1944;
    Luzon (White Beach 2), 9 January 1945;
    Okinawa (Blue Beach), 1 April 1945;
    Iheya Shima, 3 June 1945; and
    Aguni Shima, 9 June 1945

  • Decommissioned and laid up at the Tongue Point Reserve Fleet, Kilisut Harbor, Port Townsend, WA
  • Sold 29 November 1946 to the Foss Tug and Barge Co., of Tacoma, WA.
  • Fate unknown.

  • Draft 10' 10"
  • Speed 20.2 kts.
  • Complement 65
  • Armament: One 3"/50 dual purpose gun mount, one 40mm gun mount; three 20mm guns, two rocket launchers, four depth charge projectors and two depth charge tracks
  • Propulsion: Two 1,440bhp General Motors 16-258S diesel engines (Serial No. 10836 and 10837), Farrel-Birmingham single reduction gear, two shafts.
