BYMS-1 Class Motor Minesweeper:

  • Laid down 22 August 1942 as BYMS-53 by the Gibbs Corp., Jacksonville, FL
  • Launched 28 December 1942
  • Completed 7 June 1943
  • Transferred to Great Britain 10 June 1943 and named HMS J-853
  • Renamed HMS BYMS-2053
  • Sunk by mine 28 April 1945 off Porto Corsini, Italy
  • Struck from the Naval Register 13 August 1945.

    Specifications:

  • Displacement 270 t.
  • Length 136'
  • Beam 24' 6"
  • Draft 8'
  • Speed 15 kts.
  • Complement 32
  • Armament: One 3"/50 dual purpose gun mount, two 20mm mounts and two depth charge projectors
  • Propulsion: Two 880bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts.
