YMS-185 served the Navies of the United Kingdom and Greece

YMS-1 Class Auxiliary Motor Minesweeper:

  • Laid down 29 May 1942 as YMS-185 by the Greenport Basin and Construction Co., Long Island, NY
  • Launched 8 August 1942
  • Completed 9 February 1943, transferred to the Royal Navy and reclassified HM J-985
  • Reclassified HM BYMS-2185
  • Returned to U. S. Navy custody 12 August 1944, transferred to Greece the same day and named RHMS Afroessa (M 209)
  • Struck from the Naval Register 8 September 1952
  • Struck from the Greek Naval register in 1973
  • Fate unknown.

  • Length 136'
  • Beam 24' 6"
  • Draft 8'
  • Speed 15 kts.
  • Complement 32
  • Armament: One 3"/50 dual purpose gun mount, two 20mm mounts, and two depth charge projectors
  • Propulsion: Two 880bhp General Motors 8-268A diesel engines, Snow and Knobstedt single reduction gear, two shafts.
