NR | Was The Navy's Face Red! Shirley Dale, 26, above, almost became that rare bird—a woman stowaway on a U. S. man-of-war. Because it was “downright cold" in Flint, Mich., she hitch-hiked to comfortable California, then felt an urge for even warmer weather. Found hiding behind motors of the destroyer Long (DD-208) in San Diego harbor few minutes before it weighed anchor for Hawaii, she said getting aboard was “easy”—all she did was to take shoreboat to ship with a group of sailors and slip into the engine room. |

NR | 10th Carrier Of War Sunk The Ommaney Bay (CVE-79), a 10,000 ton aircraft carrier has been sunk in the Pacific after a short but violent career. She was the lOlh U. S. Carrier sunk In World War II. The Navy told her story last night in announcing the loss of both the Ommaney Bay and the fast mine sweeper Long (DMS-12). It did not say exactly how they met their end but acknowledged it was through "enemy action." Loss of the two ships brought to 261 the total U. S. Naval losses in the war. |

785k | Leonard Clifton King. WHO DIED IN THE SERVICE OF HIS COUNTRY AT SEA. ASIATIC AREA, ATTACHED USS LONG. HE STANDS IN THE UNBROKEN LINE OF PATRIOTS. WHO HAVE DARED TO DIE THAT FREEDOM MIGHT LIVE. In Memorium: In the Second Book of Shmuel (Samuel), 22nd chapter, 5th through the 20th verses, translated from the original in Hebrew and published by the Koren Publishers of Jerusalem, Israel, 1982, can perhaps aptly describe the fate of the crew and all other U.S. sailors who died defending their county: "When the waves of death compassed me / the floods of ungodly men made me afraid; / the bonds of She'ol encircled me; / the snares of death took me by surprise; / in my distress I called upon the Lord, / and cried to my G-D: / and he heard my voice out of his temple, / and my cry entered into his ears. / Then the earth shook and trembled; /the foundations of heaven moved / and shook because of his anger /...the heavy mass of waters, and thick clouds of the skies /... And the channels of the sea appeared, / the foundations of the world were laid bare, / at the rebuking of the Lord, at the blast at the breath of his nostrils. / He sent from above, he took me; / he drew me out of many waters; / he delivered me from my strong enemy, and from those who hated me; for they were too strong for me. / They surprised me in the day of my calamity: / but the Lord was my stay..." | Image provided by findagrave.com |
