LST-418 was transferred to the United Kingdom for the duration of World War II
LST-1 Class Tank Landing Ship:
  • Laid down, 2 November 1942, at Bethlehem Fairfield Co., Baltimore, MD.
  • Launched, 30 November 1942
  • Transferred to the United Kingdom, 29 January 1943 and commissioned HM LST-418
  • LST-418 saw no active service in the US Navy
    Royal Navy History
  • Participated in Sicily, Salerno and Anzio operations (MacDermott Ships Without Names)
  • Sunk by the German submarine U-230 during Operation Shingle, off Anzio, 16 February 1944, crew members were rescued by LCI(L)-194. Location - Lat 41° North, Long 12°, 55 minutes East, 8 kilometers northwest of Punta Papa, Ponza Island (See UK National Archives FO 371/130441) for correct date of sinking.) DANFS date of the reported sinking, 20 April 1944, is in error
  • Struck from the Naval Register, 16 May 1944

    Typical loads
    One Landing Craft Tank (LCT), tanks, wheeled and tracked vehicles, artillery, construction equipment and military supplies. A ramp or elevator forward allowed vehicles access to tank deck from main deck
    Additional capacity included sectional pontoons carried on each side of vessel amidships, to either build Rhino Barges or use as causeways. Married to the bow ramp, the causeways would enabled payloads to be delivered ashore from deeper water or where a beachhead would not allow the vessel to be grounded forward after ballasting
    Armament - US Varied with availability when each vessel was outfitted. Retro-fitting was accomplished throughout WWII. The ultimate armament design for United States vessels was
