USS Germantown (LSD-42)


CDR. Gary A. Harrington II, USN

A native of Lavista, Nebraska, Commander Harrington enlisted in the Navy in 1992 and earned his commission through the Seaman to Admiral program in 1998.

At sea, his division officer assignments include Combat Information Center and Training Officer in USS MCINERNEY (FFG 8) and Navigator and Assistant Operations Officer in USS HUE CITY (CG 66). As a Department Head, he served as Chief Engineer in MHC CREW CONQUEST, Chief Engineer in MCM CREW SWERVE, and Chief Engineer in USS MESA VERDE (LPD 19).

Ashore, he earned a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Finance and Management with honors and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Jacksonville University. He is also a graduate of the U. S. Naval War College and Maritime Advanced Warfighting School in Newport, R.I. He received a Masters of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies, his Joint Professional Military Education Phase One Certificate, and qualification as an Operational Planner. Most recently, he served on the combined staff of U.S. Naval Forces Europe, U.S. Naval Forces Africa, and U.S. Sixth Fleet as the Future Operations and Plans Lead and Lead Planner for Africa Partnership Station in the Africa Engagement Directorate. Harrington served as Germantown's executive officer since August 2013.

His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (four awards), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal (four awards) and various other unit and campaign service medals and ribbons.
