CAPT Jeff Ward grew up in New York State. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Boston University in 1989 and was commissioned as an Ensign, onboard USS CONSTITUTION, through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps at Boston University. He later attended the Naval War College and earned a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies.
He has served at sea as a Division Officer onboard USS ROANOKE (AOR 7) in Long Beach CA where he completed a deployment to the Arabian Gulf, and onboard USS ENGLAND (CG 22) in San Diego. Upon completion of the Department Head training pipeline, CAPT Ward reported to USS SUPPLY (AOE 6) in Norfolk, VA as Operations Officer where he completed a deployment to the Mediterranean and Arabian Gulf. He conducted another Mediterranean deployment during his second Department Head tour as Operations Officer in USS AUSTIN (LPD 4). CAPT Ward served as Executive Officer in USS LASALLE (AGF 3), the Sixth Fleet Flagship in Gaeta Italy. His most recent sea tour was as Commanding Officer of USS ASHLAND (LSD 48) in Norfolk where he completed two deployments off the east coast of Africa and in the Arabian Gulf.
CAPT Ward’s shore tours include the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Washington D.C. as a Rating Assignment Officer and Enlisted Community Manager, Flag Secretary for Commander, Amphibious Group Two at NAB Little Creek, Norfolk, VA, Director of Combat Systems Training for Department Heads at Surface Warfare Officers School in Newport, RI, and as Amphibious and CRUDES Placement Officer for PERS-41 at Naval Personnel Command in Millington, TN. Following command, CAPT Ward taught at Command Leadership School in Newport, RI. CAPT Ward’s most recent tour was on the Joint Staff in Washington D.C. as the Assistant Deputy Director for Operations at the National Military Command Center. In January 2014 CAPT Ward assumed the position of Executive Officer of USS BONHOMME RICHARD (LHD 6) in Sasebo, Japan and relieved Capt Tynch as Commanding Officer in April 2015
CAPT Ward’s awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (5 awards), and Navy Commendation Medal (4 awards).
