Combat highlights include participating in the opening campaign of Operation Iraqi Freedom on March 21, 2003, as well as scoring the first and only strike by an S 3B Viking in Operation Iraqi Freedom destroying a Naval vessel in a southern port city of Iraq with an air to ground missile on March 26, 2003.
Ashore, CAPT Sardiello graduated from the USN Test Pilot School at NAS Patuxent River, and performed over 200 hours of flight test of numerous project aircraft with Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Twenty (VX-20).
Shore tours also include duty as an S-3B Instructor NFO at VS-41, J-6 action officer on the Joint Staff, Executive Assistant to Commander Naval Air Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, graduate of the US Naval War College as well as temporary assignments to both Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and NASA Johnson Space Center.
CAPT Sardiello has logged over 2,700 flight hours and 500 carrier arrested landings. He holds post-graduate degrees in Computer Science and National Security and Strategic Studies, and is a Department of Navy Acquisition Professional. He is a recipient of the Commander Naval Air Forces Leadership Award for 2008. Military awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), Strike Flight Air Medal, and the Navy-Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards, one with Combat ‘V’) in addition to various unit and campaign awards.
