His first sea duty assignment was Helicopter Anti- Submarine Squadron FOURTEEN in Atsugi, Japan. He embarked upon USS INDEPENDENCE (CV-62) and USS KITYY HAWK (CV-63) with carrier Air Wing FIVE completing one WESTPAC and two deployments to the Persian Gulf.
In January 2000 following his initial sea tour, Captain Aguilar was assigned to Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center, Fallon, Nevada as a Seahawk Weapons and Tactics Instructor and Airwing Training instructor for the SH-60F/HH-60H. In July 2002, he reported to Carrier Air Wing SEVENTEEN staff where he completed his third deployment to the Persian Gulf aboard USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN-73). In October 2003, Captain Aguilar reported to Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron FIFTEEN assigned to Carrier Air Wing SEVENTEEN, where he completed a fourth deployment to the Persian Gulf aboard USS JOHN F KENNEDY (CV-67). In August 2005, he participated in Joint Task Force Katrina providing humanitarian assistance to the citizens of New Orleans, Louisiana.
He attended the College of Naval Command and Staff in Newport, Rhode Island, earning a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. Followed by completion of Joint Professional Military Education Phase II at the Joint Forces Staff College. From December 2006 to October 2008, Captain Aguilar served as the Chief of War Games at the Missile Defense Agency in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
In July 2010 Captain Aguilar became the 52nd Commanding Officer of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron FOUR (HS-4). He led HS-4 through two WESTPAC deployments which included humanitarian assistance operations as part of Operation TOMODOACHI in Japan, counter-piracy operations in the Gulf of Oman, Maritime Security Operations in the Gulf of Aden, and two more deployments to the Persian Gulf. Under Captain Aguilar’s leadership, HS-4 flew more than 3750 mishap free hours and was awarded the Battle E in recognition of the squadron’s accomplishments. During his follow on assignment with OPNAV N433C, he was selected to attend Navy Nuclear Power Training and upon completion of training he reported as the Big XO aboard USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN-69). Captain Aguilar is currently assigned as the Commanding Officer of the 6th FLEET Flagship, the USS MT WHITNEY (LCC 20) in Gaeta, ITALY. Captain Aguilar accumulated more than 3000 hours in the H-60F/HH. His awards and decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Air Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal (two), and various campaign and unit awards.
