Gunboat (Tinclad No.52):
  • Built in 1863 at Cincinnati, OH., as the steamer W.C. Mann
  • Launched, date unknown
  • Purchased by RADM. D. D. Porter at Cincinnati, OH., 23 February 1864
  • Fitted out and commissioned, date unknown, as USS Elfin, Acting Master A. F. Thompson in command
  • Assigned to the Mississippi Squadron, she cruised between Caledonia and Mound City, IL.
  • Elfin next cruised from Cairo, IL., to the head of the Tennessee River
  • On 4 November 1864 USS Elfin was operating with USS Tawah and USS Key West in the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers
  • Final Disposition, after a severe engagement of several hours with heavy Confederate shore batteries it was considered impossible to save the three vessels, and they were burned to prevent capture.
