USS Porpoise (I)


Porpoise Class Top-sail Schooner:
  • Built in 1820 at the Portsmouth Navy Yard, Portsmouth, N.H.
  • Launched, date unknown
  • Commissioned USS Porpoise circa 1821, LT. James Ramage in command
  • 1821-23 assigned to the West Indies in search of pirates
  • 1924-25 assigned to the West African coast to suppress the slave trade
  • Late 1825 cruised off the Northeast coast, CDR. Foxhall A. Parker in command
  • 1826-30 cruised the Mediterranean, LTs Benjamin Cooper, John H. Bell and Thomas M. Newell successively in command
  • 1833 returned to the West Indies, LT William Taylor in command
  • Final Disposition, wrecked on a reef off Point Lizardo, Mexico
