SS Cape Cod (AK-5041)

Cape C Class Breakbulk Cargo Ship:
  • Laid down in 1962 as SS Sheldon Lykes a Maritime Administration type (C3-S-37c) hull under Maritime Administration contract (MA 114) at Bethlehem Steel, Sparrows Point, Baltimore, MD.
  • Launched circa mid-1962
  • Delivered to the Maritime Administration in 1964 for operation by Lykes Bros. SS Co.
  • Reacquired by the Maritime Administration (MARAD) in 1984 and laid up in reserve as part of the MARAD Ready Reserve Force, renamed SS Cape Cod
  • SS Cape Cod was assigned to the Military Sealift Command (MSC) Ready Reserve Force as AK-5041
  • When activated SS Cape Cod (AK-5041) was assigned to the Military Sealift Command (MSC) as one of the Military Sealift Command's Modular Cargo Delivery System Ready Reserve Force (RRF) Ships
  • Downgraded to the MARAD National Defense Reserve Fleet from the RRF, 1 October 2001
  • Final Dispostion, to be scrapped, contract awarded, 24 August 2009, to All Star Metals LLC of Brownsville, TX., will receive $328,122 to recycle Cape Cod
