| 60k | Leonard Foster Mason was born in Middlesborough, Kentucky, 22 February 1920. He later moved to Lima, Ohio, and enlisted in the Marine Corps in April 1943. Promoted to private first class in March 1943, Mason was sent to the Pacific war zone in October. Mason landed on Guam as part of Company E, 2nd Battalion, Third Marine Division, 22 July 1944. Two enemy machine guns opened fire on Mason’s platoon while the men traversed a gully. Acting on his own intiative, he attacked the enemy position from the rear. Although wounded many times in the upper body, Mason cleared out the hostile position, and rejoined his platoon to report on the action. Mason died of his wounds aboard a hospital ship the next day and was buried at sea. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. Photo from the USMC History Division. | Bill Gonyo |
