On February 10 1941 the construction orders for the Stevenson, Stockton, Thorn and Turner were cancelled. The four ships were to have been experimental Destroyer Escorts. The Stevenson and Stockton were to have been 900 ton prototypes while the Thorn and Turner were to have been 1100 ton prototypes. That same day they were reordered as Gleaves Class destroyers and new hull numbers were assigned as follows:

USS Stevenson (DD-503) to USS Stevenson (DD-645)
USS Stockton (DD-504) to USS Stockton (DD-646)
USS Thorn (DD-505) to USS Thorn (DD-647)
USS Turner (DD-506) to USS Turner (DD-648)
