Richmond K Turner 67k Med-moored in Barcelona, Spain, on July 11, 1979, alongside the Farragut-class guided missile destroyer USS King (DDG 41). Though they looked quite different, both were built as guided missile "frigates" (DLG) -- the Leahy class being, in fact, the immediate successors to the Farragut class. On 30 June 1975, the Leahy class were reclassified as "cruisers", while the Farragut class became "destroyers". Note Richmond K. Turner was fitted with Harpoon launchers aft, replacing 3"/50 twin gun mounts. Fabio Pe?a
Richmond K Turner 79k The forward superstructure had an impressive appearance. This photo (taken in Barcelona, Spain, on 29 November 1980) shows the ASROC launcher, the forward pair of SPG-55B missile guidance radars (one of them partially hidden by a SATCOM antenna), the SPS-48 3D radar, and a set of ESM/ECM antennas, some of them covered under radomes, some uncovered, and some cantilevered out from the ship's structure. Fabio Pe?a
Richmond K Turner 76k This view (29 November 1980) shows the aft missile launcher and missile guidance radars. Note the TACAN and 2D air search radar on the after "mack", and a quad Harpoon canister in place of a twin 3"/50 gun mount. Phalanx had not yet been installed. Fabio Pe?a
